The geographic diversity of nontuberculous mycobacteria isolated from pulmonary samples: A NTM-NET collaborative study
نویسنده
چکیده
A significant knowledge gap exists concerning the geographical distribution of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) isolation worldwide. To provide a snapshot of NTM species distribution, global partners in the NTM-NET framework (www.ntm-net.org), a branch of TBNET, provided identification results of the total number of patients in 2008 in whom NTM were isolated from pulmonary samples. From these data, we visualized the relative distribution of the different NTM found per continent and country. We received species identification data for 20182 patients, from 62 laboratories in 30 countries across six continents. Ninety-one different NTM species were isolated. Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) bacteria predominated in most countries, followed by M. gordonae and M. xenopi. Important differences in geographical distribution of MAC species as well as M. xenopi, M. kansasii, and rapid growing mycobacteria were observed. This snapshot demonstrates that the species distribution among NTM isolates from pulmonary specimens in the year 2008 differed by continent and differs by countries within these continents. These differences in species distribution may partly determine the frequency and manifestations of pulmonary NTM disease in each geographical location.

متن کاملIdentification of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Species Isolated from Water Samples Using Phenotypic and Molecular Methods and Determination of their Antibiotic Resistance Patterns by E- Test Method, in Isfahan, Iran
Introduction Many studies have shown epidemiological links between strains isolated in tap water, and those isolated from patients. Molecular methods linked to PCR are more reliable and faster for identification of non- tuberculous mycobacteria(NTM). In this study molecular methods were used for identification and typing of NTM. Materials and Methods Five hundred ml of 85 water ...

To characterize the distribution of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) species isolated from pulmonary samples from persons in Asia and their association with pulmonary infections, we reviewed the literature. Mycobacterium avium complex bacteria were most frequently isolated (13%-81%) and were the most common cause of pulmonary NTM disease (43%-81%). Also pathogenic were rapidly growing mycobact...

Introduction: In HIV-associated tuberculosis cases, identifying nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) from clinical samples has become essential regarding patients’ treatment and prognosis. This study aims to determine the prevalence of different Mycobacteria species from immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients with suspected tuberculosis attending a tertiary care hospital in Kolkata, India....
متن کاملEnvironmental Nontuberculous Mycobacteria in the Hawaiian Islands
Lung disease caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is an emerging infectious disease of global significance. Epidemiologic studies have shown the Hawaiian Islands have the highest prevalence of NTM lung infections in the United States. However, potential environmental reservoirs and species diversity have not been characterized. In this cross-sectional study, we describe molecular and phy...
